MORE than $14,000 were donated to students and staff of two schools affected by the fire in Kg Setia'A' in Kampong Ayer on January 26.
A total of 32 recipients comprising 16 students from Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, 15 students and a staff of Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School received the assistance in the form of cash.
In his remarks, Acting Director of Schools Hj Kassim Mohammad Yassin said that the donation was an initiation of students, teachers and staff of the government primary and secondary schools throughout the country as well as officers and staff of the Department of Schools of the Ministry of Education.
"Alhamdulillah, the fund has collected $14,791.21 in donations," said Hj Kassim, adding that the contribution was sign of deep concern for the welfare of the fire victims.
He expressed the hope that the donation would help ease the burden of those involved.
"In addition, the Ministry of Education, through its Department of Schools, will also be helping students affected by the fire in the form of exercise books, school supplies and uniforms," he said.
Hj Jalil Luba, a grandfather of two students at the Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, expressed his gratitude for the financial assistance given to his grandsons.
"The people's concern for our difficult situation is priceless," said Hj Jalil, whose house was one of the 10 homes destroyed by the fire.
He and 12 others in the family are temporarily staying with his in-laws in Kg Setia 'B', who already share the house with another dozen family members.
"We are now living in a crowded condition while we are waiting for further instructions from the government," said Hj Jalil.
"I will be patient and leave this situation in the hands of Allah (SWT)." Mohd Abdul Azim Abu Bakar, a Year 12 student of Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School, said that after the fire broke out his family have been staying at his father's friend house in Kg Setia 'A'.
"I am really moved. I would like to express my sincere thanks to everyone who has helped me." TipahPiut, a staff at the Pehin Dato Jamil Primary School, who was also one of the recipients, thanked the people for the donation.
