The C.O.B.R.E. Project

By: Atifah Osman

As one of the Brunei schools situated in the Kampong Ayer area, our school had been invited to join a competition held by the South East Asian Youth Leadership Program. The care of Brunei River ecology project (COBRE) school committee had decided to put on a display of what was submitted for this competition in conjunction with the end of year prize presentation ceremony.

Therefore, on the 27th November 2012, parents and students who attended the event were welcomed to see and experienced themselves of what we had prepared for this project. This project aims to create awareness to the school community as well as the villagers on the impact of human doing to its environment in addition to emphasising on what can be done to preserve Kampong Ayer as an important historical landmark.

Pra Orientation Day

By: Atifah Osman
Photo: Lin Bong Chu

Yesterday, Sekolah Rendah Pehin Dato Jamil welcomed new intake of pra students for the year 2013 for an orientation. They were brought into the school ground to familiarized themselves with what it will be like for them next year. With that being mentioned, the sound of little kids crying is something to be expected when being placed in a new environment and that was what happened. Hopefully, by next year they will be able to adapt quickly into school-life.

Ekspo Keusahawanan Pembangunan Pelajar

By: Atifah Osman

In conjunction with the 22nd Teachers Day celebration, our school participated in the student entrepreneurship development expo (SEDEx) that will be held at Airport Mall on 13th - 15th November 2012 from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. There were two products prepared by the school for this expo: vases and headbands.

Product #1 - Vases
These vases were made from plastic bottles that was covered with newspapers sealed with white cement to give it the curve and the weight. Then, it was covered with threads and the tip of the spoons to give such great looking little vases. For finishing touches, it was sprayed with metallic/pearl acrylic paint - the smell was... *dizzy head*. All of the vases can be purchased at the price ranging from $2.50 to $5.00.

Product #2 - Headbands
For our school's second product - headbands, were simply made by using materials as shown on the picture.    Its quite a hassle to make these. From stitching the lace to the band, choosing what is appropriate with limited beads and such and working with the hot glue was frustrating. But, hey... there were 12 headbands of 2 different sizes that you could choose from. Price ranging from $3.00 to $5.00.

One of the work-in-progress headband. :)

Teachers Day Celebration

By: Atifah Osman
Photos: Atifah Osman | Lin Bong Chu

Its the final day of Term 3 and the kids are going to enjoy 4 days of school holiday (excluding sunday and friday). This means the teachers too (some, I must say...) will get some time off including me (Yabbadabadooooo~). Its not much but enough, I suppose to get some peace of mind. :D

Not only today is our last day of school but its the day whereby we, the member of SR PDJ celebrate teachers day in our school. It was seriously a laid back celebration, a feeling that I rarely get to experience when I was in school. It was so much fun considering its my first teachers day celebration this year. Reflecting back on my school years, I don't think we were able to witnessed any of the fun thing we have today. Well done to AJKs, performers, teachers and students. Keep up the good work.

Happy teachers day for all. Thank you for all the food and presents... May Allah bless us all to be better educators for the better future of our own country.

By the way, thank you to my secret santa@teacher who was made public; for getting me a big bulky present. It somehow made me feel so bad for the person who received my budget-contained present (a BIG funny story behind it - never failed to make me and my partner in crime to burst into laughter). I wonder how she responds to it. I guess she doesn't know how nervous it made me feel thinking of her reaction. It may look big on the outside but... -_-"

Before the event began, we had a little makan-makan during break time though there were quite a number of teachers who got to the table earlier than 'scheduled'. :p

A sweet treat from one of the teachers.

Yummmmmyyyy!
The only picture of the food that day.

Our usual emcee for any events and one of our sound engineer, I suppose...

As one of the segments for this celebration, ten Year 2 students were asked to go to the stage and imitate some of SR PDJ's teachers for the audience to guess. It was an entertaining show although I was one of the teachers being imitated; its kind of embarassing. But, luckily the kids were not able to guess it was me. The girl don't have my signature green hand fan but a job well done kiddos. :) Coaches, do better next time but jangan labih-labih ketulahan karang~ :p

Photos will come to follow... Still waiting for my dearest colleague to upload it to Facebook for me to post it here. Thank you for lending me your camera Cikgu Rinah HS... It made people think I love purple since from head to toe I am glinting in purple. 0.o What a coincidence...

Thank you for uploading Cikgu Rinah HS and Cikgu Lin BC.

Dokumentari Hari Guru 2012

By: Atifah Osman

A few weeks ago, a crew of RTB paid our school a visit. They wanted to make a special program to celebrate 22nd Year of Teachers' Day. After a long wait, the program was aired on the night of 23rd September 2012 at 9 p.m.

On September 5th 2012, the crew waited for the teachers of SR PDJ at the Sungai Lampai's green dome lagoon to record our everyday's journey to get to the school's building using the school's boat provided by the Government.

After recording our waterway journey, they managed to record our usual morning assembly before heading to classes recording our daily teaching routine.

The selection of who gets to be recorded were done the day before. We had less than 24-hour to get our teaching and class ready for TV-shots. But, what really amazed me... There were teachers who were selected at the very last minute - on the day itself: minutes before the crew entered the class, I suppose. This means that they were not given early notice like the other teachers who were informed a day earlier. They don't have the luxury of time to get things done perfectly but they have done a great job! They have more clippings broadcasted than yours truly. ^___^

Below is the video for the special program celebrating this year's teachers' day courtesy of rtbnews. Many will probably preferred to not watch it again - including yours truly ani juaaaaa... But, for the sake of future reference I'll just put it here although I feel like destroying *pardon my harsh words* every copy there is.

Selamat Hari Guru

By: Atifah Osman

Its 23rd September 2012.
Happy teachers day to ALL teachers out there~
^____^

"Semoga dapat menjadi guru yang hadirnya ditunggu.
Hilangnya dirindu.
Ilmunya diburu.
Nasihatnya diseru.
Tingkahlaku dan budi pekertinya ditiru.
dan...
Kehilangannya diiringi doa restu."

Yesterday was a special day for me!
...perhaps other teachers of Year 5 (2012) would feel the same too.
What an amazing surprise they had given us.

It all started with two different surprise parties held in Year 5 classes to celebrate advance Teachers Day. Since I knew there was another party nearby, my students and I requested to have both parties placed at one venue (in Year 5A's class) to make it easy for all the invited teachers to be in the same place at the same time.
Less complicated that way, ain't it?

Thank you cikgu Hjh Afidah for having us in your classroom.

Thank you kiddos for such brilliant surprise though I knew all about it months ago when they started to collect money and kept it on my desk for safety plus our GB told us during one of our contact time that the kids had asked for permission to have such party in class.

It is amazing of how they went straight up to the highest position for permission.
UNBELIEVABLY courageous! Where do they get such confidence? It boggles my mind.

Anyways, we feel very much appreciated.
Once again, thank you *BIG hugs*.

Apparently, there is a part two for this celebration: there is a pre-celebration and there is a post-celebration. Yeay! ...for us! ^__^
This time around it was hosted by Year 5B - Cikgu Hasni's class.
Teachers of Year 5B were invited to their class during break time.
Thank you kids, once again for making us feel special in the month of September where teachers all around Brunei is celebrated.
Thank you for the bottom of our hearts. <3

Big apologies for the quality of the pictures.
I had to use my SE phone to get the pictures taken.
I would've used my camera but after rummaging my bags (Yes, BAGS!) I just couldn't find it.
I always had it with me.
I guess its just not my day.

Our Master Timetable is finally READY!

By: Atifah Osman

Akhirnya satu hutang dalam sejuta dapat dilangsaikan pada hari ini! Alhamdulillah... Tugasan yang diberikan berbulan-bulan yang lalu, cuba diselesaikan sedikit demi sedikit terlaksana jua akhirnya.

Starting from organising colours, printing, cutting almost 1000++ mini tags, taped with double sided onto laminating film, getting everything laminated, cutting it again into small pieces before finally attaching it with velcro was too much to handle ALONE. With a few help from kind-hearted colleagues namely Cikgu Hasni, Cikgu Windy and our clerk, Miss Juliana (my apologies, if I miss out anyone) plus my lovable siblings everything was done before the school reopen in June.

However, getting the task done is too difficult with so many things going on in school. Plus, the condition of the working environment where the noticeboards placed were just too demotivating and uninspiring. plus SCARY.
It has poor ventilation and spending more than half an hour there is completely a bad idea. Unfortunately, work is work!

Bare noticeboards... Yes, NOTICEBOARDS! We have two noticeboards to fill up...

What a mess! We terrorize the senior teachers' tables
[ampun beribu ampun...]
We were getting new minitags done on that VERY day~
My bad! Forgot to print out the minitags for the school programs.
Not sure of how to do it actually - needed some help. :(

The smell of that spray is seriously toxifying but satisfying! Things we do to beautify the school.
Kudos to our art teacher. Its a brilliant idea to use the kids' work for our noticeboard ^__^
But surely, soon akan dicabut semula untuk kelas lukisan...

Its finally DONE but not quite... We'll try to improve it (into ver. 2.0) whenever we have time to kill which I doubt I'll have that privileage anytime soon.

We handled more than 1000+ mini tags in ONE DAY! AH-mazing~

Thank you to those who helped out: teachers, students and school staffs. We really appreciate it walau hanya memindahkan satu kad sahaja. ^___^ Those who offer to help but unfortunately we failed to delegate the work, jangan jara to help out... Sorry! Its just bad timing. You were asking when there was an abundance of help which I think is unwise to mention here where we get it from... Ehehehe~ ^___^

Penyerahan Derma bagi Anak Yatim 2012

By: Atifah Osman

SBAfL Professional Development Program

By: Atifah Osman

{WRITING IN PROGRESS}

On 19th July 2012, the nine days of Professional Development Program for School Based Assessment for Learning (SBAfL) has come to an end for Group 2. A total of seven teachers including myself were sent to attend the program. Now, the program has ended, we are expected to share with the rest of the teachers in the school and try to implement SBAfL tools in our lessons as part of the SPN21 requirements.

In between the first wave (started on 2nd July until 7th July) and the second wave (14th July to 19th July) of this Professional Development Program, we as the pioneer of this program for our school were given a follow-up task to complete in school. We were asked to try out these SBAfL tools in our own classroom for four days.

Some of the SBAfL tools used during the 4-days implementation:

(A) Traffic Light Cards

Basically, the colour of the traffic light cards imitates the traffic light colour that can be seen on the road. Therefore, introducing this to the students were a breeze as they relates it well to their existing schema of knowledge. This is actually used to indicate their level of understanding to the teacher in order to immediate feedback or actions to take place.

When the students were asked to assess themselves using the traffic light cards, not all of the pupils showed the green cards.  Some of the pupils put up the yellow and the red cards. This means that they have some problem understanding the instruction or explanation that has been given.

After clarifying everything that needs to be done, the pupils were asked to assessed themselves once again and as shown in the picture above, all the pupils showed the green cards in the 'after' picture. This allows for the next stage of teaching and learning to proceed.

Youtube videos on SBAfL in secondary schools - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eqss5BSKwOA

A different set of traffic lights was also prepared by the other teacher who is teaching MIB. Though it may look different but it is still used the same way.

(B) Strategic Questioning

Strategic questioning is a good tool to challenge students' previous knowledge. This is highly effective for students with higher ability. Therefore, when using it as a whole class approach its best to have the students grouped in a mixed ability group. Otherwise, the students can be assigned different tasks to do in class as an alternative to the previous.
In the previous lesson, the pupils were taught on how to add and subtract like fractions. The way to answer such questions is completely different from answering questions of unlike fraction and so, the pupils were asked to answer the questions without first teaching them on how to.

Of course, there were some frustrations among students as they just could not get the answer. But, when one of them succeed in answering the question, everyone jump for joy! Seeing them going through each stage of comprehending the question definitely make everything worth it though this kind of lesson is always time consuming.

Here is another way of how to ask questions to the students (carried out after SBAfL PD ended) - the question and the answer is given to the students and they'll be asked to find a way to get to the answer. As before, the student have not yet taught on how to solve such questions. There were given enough wait-time to solve the question as a group......

(C) Self-Assessment

After the

-----insert pictures-----

Once we returned for the second wave, we were expected to share our success stories as well as challenges that we faced while implementing SBAfL tools in our everyday lessons. However, I declined to share my experience as it was too embarrassing to speak in public. Besides, my little experiment was full of failure!

Many factors had contributed to that i.e. minimal time to properly plan the lesson since we had to prepare for a school event on the same week and the introduction of a new topic *in desperate need to catch up with the syllabus* makes it difficult to apply such tools in my lesson.

Moreover, half of my class had to go for a field trip which left me with not much of a choice but to do something simpler instead. When everyone returned the next day, the students had difficulty in assessing themselves as well as their peers especially in using the traffic light cards (the students loved to play with it during instruction time - they lost their concentration.) and coming up with some comments to write for two stars and a wish was difficult to most of them and so much more.

Thankfully, most of us had the same difficulty when trying to implement such follow-up task! Therefore, not sharing with the whole group these challenges was not a big loss to me. :) Suggestions and advised were given to overcome such problems by our facilitators and the main thing to bear in mind was that, each and every SBAfL tools are not to be used in everyday lesson - use only when appropriate and time is definitely needed to make things closer to perfection. For the time being, we were advised to practice something that is simple to do for everyday lesson i.e. writing lesson intention and success criteria on our lesson plan and sharing it with the students is the most essential - for now! As time goes by, and when the time is right, it is perhaps time to move up a level and use other suitable SBAfL tools.

Projek MS Sayang

By: Atifah Osman

Our school had been chosen as part of the pilot stage project for MS Sayang, a community project conducted by teaching instructors as well as students from Maktab Sains Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan (MSPSBS) who were about to take A' Level exams this year.

Since early June, a teaching instructor and about a dozen MSPSBS students came over to our school every Friday to help motivate, inspire and teach several suitable learning techniques to a number of potential PSR students.

Our students seemed to enjoy themselves participating in this project. However, today, the 6th of July, our students had to bid their farewell as this project had come to an end to allow the MSPSBS's students to prepare themselves with their big exams as well.

A little souvenir were presented to the MSPSBS's school representative as an appreciation of their valuable time spent educating the students of SR Pehin Dato Jamil.

As they walked along the bridge leaving our school area, we hoped that they enjoyed their time spent with our students and we wished all the students involved in this project success in their studies. May Allah bless all of you, always.

^^
Wassalam.

Local Cannon Exhibition

By: Atifah Osman
Photos: Khadizah Metussin

Seeing today's news clipping reminded me to update this blog. Once again, my precious students were placed in the local newspaper.

These students, 10 upper primary students, were selected to represent the school in the so called drawing 'competition' before the second term school holiday to enliven the local cannons exhibition held just two days ago. I must say, being so proud of my students, they did well with their drawings! They have done us proud! Hearing responses from the sponsors made me feel lucky to have them as my students.

Good job kids, keep up the good work. ^_^

[Updated: Friday, 29th June 2012]

It was rather sad when I was informed that the teachers who were in charge bringing the students for this event were not allowed to take pictures. But now, thank you to Cikgu Lin Bong Chu, we can see some of the work done by our fellow students.

Thank you again Miss Lin for sharing the pictures you took while visiting the museum recently. ^_^ Not forgetting Cikgu Khadizah as well for completing the missing pieces of the 10 drawings done by our students. :)
